Dream
interpretation
relies heavily on the manner in which the symbols
are recorded, particularly in view of the fact that one's memory of
the dream
symbols
and their finer details is usually not particularly reliable. This tutorial
covers quick and easy ways to record your dream
symbols,
and highlights some key elements that will help you during the dream
interpretation
and analysis
stages. For this phase of the dream
interpretation
tutorial, you will still be using your notebook.
Dream Symbols as Keywords
Immediately upon waking, write down some keywords from your dream. Dream
symbols quickly fade once the rational
mind begins to kick in, and you therefore need to find a way to record
the symbols as quickly and accurately as possible. Attempting to write
out your dreams in long hand at this stage is likely to distract you,
and if you're recording your dream in the middle of the night, long
hand may cause unnecessary sleep disruption. Rather stick to keywords,
symbols or short phrases such as "people" "shouting",
"lightning", "green car", "cake". (See
example below)
It is important that you don't
try to convince yourself that you'll remember the details at a later
stage, few people do, and when they do, the dream
symbols have often changed significantly
by then. I have tested this several times with my own dreams and have
found that by morning the green car has become blue, and the cake has
miraculously reshaped itself into loaf of bread. Naturally, when this
happens, you will have lost many of the vital interpretational clues.
Drawing Your Dream Symbols
Sometimes it's quicker and easier to draw your dream. For example, you
may have met a strange creature in your dream which is half monster,
half elephant. In such a case, it makes sense to do a quick line drawing
instead. Drawings can also be of great benefit when recalling or analyzing
dreams in the morning. Often they are easier to relate to than keywords.
Play with your drawings once you're fully awake and add to them if you
wish - often this is when the best dream insights come.
Add Colour to Your Dream Symbols
Colours often provide important clues. Everybody relates to colours
in a unique way and the associations with colours may be of great benefit
during the interpretation process. For example, if your dream
symbols are predominantly red and you
associate red with danger, the dream in question may carry a warning
message. Colours also often relate to chakras, which can serve to guide
the dreamer to the root of the message. In addition to this, colours
help to enliven the dream symbols
and may serve to aid dream recall.
Add Motion and Direction to Your Symbols
Often when one recalls symbols,
they come in random order. Use of arrows can help to help re-establish
the order in which the symbols
were presented to you. Add twirls, swirls or any other indicators of
motion that will help you to keep the dream alive. For example, whether
a car was reversing, tumbling or flying in your dream could make a substantial
difference to the interpretation of the dream. Again, it makes a lot
more sense to add these to your drawings than to try and remember details
such as this at a later stage.
If you've recorded your basic dream
symbols in the middle of the night, let
go of them and go back to sleep. In the morning, play with them, tweak
them, and add to them until you're satisfied that you've recalled the
entire dream. Having done this, you're ready to move on to Phase
3: Dream Analysis.
