Dream
incubation is a valuable process in that it not only gives your
dreams direction, but it also aids
dream analysis and interpretation
by providing valuable clues as to what your dream may be about. However
it is also important to note that dream incubation
is a preference rather than a necessity. If you prefer not to incubate
your dreams, skip this section
and move on to Phase
2: Recording Dream Symbols. It may also be worth your while
to experiment with the guidelines provided in Tips
for Dream Recall and finding a method that works for you
before continuing with this tutorial.
A basic notepad or scribble pad
and pen are ideal for Phases 1 - 4 of this dream
interpretation tutorial. It makes sense
to keep the notepad at your beside to enable you to record your dream
images prior to moving on with the day's events. It will also be used
to write down your incubation question and allow you to scribble your
heart's content during the dream analysis phase without worrying about
order and neatness. It basically serves as preparation for your dream
journal entry, which will be addressed in Phase
5: Dream Journal.
To incubate
a dream, give some thought to your incubation
question, which will serve as the dream
directive. Some examples are: "Please give me guidance on my work
situation" or "How can I resolve my marital difficulties?"
Writing it down serves several purposes: firstly, it helps you to clarify
your query or dilemma more precisely in your own mind; secondly, no
matter how clear it is in your mind prior to going to sleep, your recollection
of it by morning is often vague or inexact; and thirdly, by writing
it down, you can forget about it an focus on dream recall instead.
Once you've noted your question and
are ready to go to sleep, suggest to yourself that you will wake up
to record your most important dreams, that you'll go back to sleep easily,
and that you will wake up refreshed in the morning. If the answer to
your question is important to you, you will wake up to record the relevant
dream.
Dream incubation
is an easy process and requires very little practice. Once you've mastered
this, move on to Phase 2:
Recording Dream Symbols which deals with how to record your dream
symbols simply, quickly and easily, yet in a manner that facilitates
maximal recall and minimal sleep disruption.
